Beyond the Badge: What QSA Accreditation Doesn't Tell You
Accreditation is a license, not a quality rating. What actually separates great QSA companies from accredited-but-mediocre ones — and how to tell the difference.
The license vs the work
Every firm in our directory holds (or claims) the same accreditation. Yet anyone who has been through multiple PCI assessments will tell you: the experience, rigor, and value vary enormously. Accreditation sets a floor — it guarantees the ROC will be accepted. It says nothing about whether the assessment was thorough, the team senior, or the findings honest.
What varies between accredited firms
- Team seniority. A QSA with 200 ROCs behind them and a newly qualified assessor hold the same credential. Ask who exactly is on your engagement.
- Scoping discipline. Great firms scope tightly and defend the scope; weak ones scope loosely and re-scope (and re-bill) mid-fieldwork.
- Finding candor. The best QSAs tell you what's actually wrong. The worst tell you what you want to hear — until your acquirer or a breach tells you otherwise.
- Vertical fluency. A firm that assesses fifty SaaS companies a year will scope your cloud environment in days; a generalist will learn it on your dime.
- Report quality. ROCs get read by acquirers and enterprise customers. Sloppy reports raise questions a clean one never would.

Request quotesHow to judge quality
References from clients your size, in your industry, from the last 12 months — and actually call them. Ask about timeline slips, surprise fees, and whether the findings were fair. Then read a redacted sample report if the firm will share one: clarity and precision in the report predict clarity and precision in the assessment.
The questions that reveal it
Our RFP worksheet has the full list, but the three highest-signal questions are: who exactly is on my team and how many ROCs have they led?, what breaks the fixed fee?, and can we speak to two reference clients our size? Evasive answers to any of the three tell you everything.

Questions
Should we pick the biggest QSA company?
Not automatically. Match the firm to the scope: complex multi-entity work favors the globals; straightforward scopes often get better attention (and prices) from boutiques.
Is a cheap accredited QSA a bargain or a warning?
It can be either. A boutique with low overhead is a bargain; a firm cutting corners on team seniority is a warning. The differentiator is the named team, not the fee.
